Computing on Sequences of Embedded Intervals

What will prevent most users to turn from standard arithmetic to interval arithmetic is the common belief that on any real-life program, interval arithmetic will return much too pessimistic bounds to their solution. Although some adequate set of reenements usually yields satisfactory results with interval arithmetic, an interval-novice would most certainly not spend the time to look into the details and learn about the mathematical peculiarities of his code. We present in this work the prototype of a software library that deals almost transparently with intervals. Directly from its model of execution, the library is able to automatically decide to reene a part or the totality of an evaluation as it is needed. We also introduce a new technique based on an extended number representation that even improves the performances of the library and reduces the interval computed after a numerical evaluation. R esum e La plupart des utilisateurs potentiels de l'arithm etique d'intervalles n'y ont pas recours parce qu'ils croient que sur un programme de taille normale, l'arithm etique d'intervalle leur donnera un intervalle de s^ uret e largement trop pessimiste. Bien que certaines m ethodes de raanement donnent de bons r esultats, un utilisateur inexp eriment e sur l'arithm etique d'intervalles ne voudra certainement pas mobiliser le temps n ecessaire a l'apprentissage des particularit es math ematiques de son code num erique en regard de l'arithm etique d'intervalles. Nous pr esentons dans ces travaux le prototype d'une biblioth eque logicielle qui traite les intervalles de faa con quasi transparente pour l'utilisateur. Gr^ ace au mod ele de calcul implant e, il est possible de d ecider automatiquement et sans intervention externe de raaner une partie ou la totalit e du calcul suivant les besoins sp eciiques de chaque op erateur. Nous proposons de nouveaux algorithmes sur un nouveau syst eme de repr esentation des nombres pour atteindre de meilleures performances et r eduir la taille de l'intervalle de s^ uret e donn e a l'utilisateur a la n des calculs.
